Benefits of e-Learning (To Learners)

The vast movement towards e-learning is clearly motivated by the many benefits it offers. Here at Hamdan Bin Mohammed e-University, we are exploring e-learning as a progressive approach to learning and training. e-Learning has a potential number of advantages to you as a learner as well as to the academic institution. However, everyone does not always assume these advantages, that is why it is important to know exactly what those advantages are.

Less expensive:

By making e-learning readily available via the Internet, CDs, DVDs, etc learners do no longer have to travel to a distant learning site, resulting in decreased travel costs and additional time savings.

Accessible and Convenient:

e-learning courses and programs are easily accessible on a 24/7 basis which allows learners to proceed through at any time that is convenient to them and from anywhere.

Efficient:

Several studies were conducted to determine the best way for learners to study and memorize. These studies have found that memorization of information depends on all human sensorial capabilities while the reactivity of information depends on the peculiarities of the individual and his motivation. The mode of transmission of messages must therefore enable the repetition according to different sensorial modes. Most often these repetitions cannot occur when using traditional methods of learning.

Another study conducted has shown that:

  • 8% of what we read is retained
  • 18% of what we see is retained
  • 25% of what we hear is retained
  • 60% of what we hear and read is retained
  • 75% of what we say is retained
  • 85% of what we say while doing it is retained

e-Learning provides content through visual graphics, text, audio, and video and may require human interaction through the use of online simulations and exercises this will enable learners to hear, see, practice and even speak thus, increasing retention rate. Learners also have the choice to repeat and go over and over their course material, which enable them to obtain better retention.

Interactive and Collaborative:

e-Learning engages learner in a significant way by pushing them rather than pulling them through the learning process. Some studies have shown in fact that e-learning also fosters interaction among learners and faculty members through the use of both synchronous and asynchronous communication tools.

Consistent:

e-learning ensures consistent delivery of knowledge and learning resources through assessment tools used to analyze learner progress and knowledge, ensuring uniform learning standards.

Flexible:

Through the internet e-learners can work with a large network of professors and other learners from all over the world at time that is fairly flexible and convenient to them, they can learn at home, work, or wherever they have Internet access, and at any time of the day.

Self-Paced:

e-learning gives a chance to learners to learn at their convenience and pace, they can choose to speed up or slow down the learning process as necessary.

Self-Directed:

By allowing learners to choose content and tools appropriate to their different interests, needs, and skill levels; e-learning can accommodate multiple learning styles using a variety of delivery methods geared to different learners; more effective for certain learners.

Challenges of e-Learning (To Learners)

Despite the many advantages offered by e-learning, e-learning is not necessarily an easy option. People who have studied online report that there can sometimes be more work involved than in traditional courses – but the experiences can be more rewarding. Below are some of the most identified challenges of e-learning as seen by learners:

Technology Issues:

Lack of technology skills or unavailability of required technologies are amongst the most common challenges of e-learning, although the lack of technology skills can be overcome by designing appropriate training and preparation program for learners and providing appropriate technical support

Reduced Social and Cultural Interaction:

This can represent a major drawback to e-learning; the impersonality, suppression of communication mechanisms such as body language, and elimination of peer-to-peer learning that are part of this potential disadvantage although with the emergence of new communication technologies these disadvantages are lessening.

Unsuitable for Certain Types of Learners:

e-learning requires a high-level of self-discipline and personal time management. Learners need to be highly self-motivated to be successful with e-learning and take full advantage of their learning experience. Learners lacking self motivation, discipline and time management skills are more likely to fail in online learning.
