Kondo Research Prize - People and Organizational Cultural Perspective


Dr. Yoshio Kondo was named ASQ’s 23rd honorary member. The citation reads, “For his exceptional contribution to the global quality community as a thought-leader in the fields of human motivation and total quality management and his exemplary personal dedication to the promotion of quality throughout the world.” Kondo is the global quality emissary for the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE), the position formerly held by quality guru Karou Ishikawa. Kondo is professor emeritus of Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan. Prior to his retirement in 1987, he was professor and dean of the faculty of engineering at Kyoto University. He also taught at Massachusetts Institute of Technology during a two-year sabbatical. His present major interest is human motivation, creativity, leadership, and participation in the field of quality management. He is a recipient of many awards plus the Tanigawa-Harris Award from the Japanese Institute of Medals. Kondo’s previous ASQ honors include the Grant and Lancaster awards and the Ishikawa and Distinguished Service medals.

Introduction

The Kondo Research Prize is a type of research fund for the support of planned research that addresses the Middle East needs, research interests and development questions in the area of people and organizational culture and behavior field. The aim is to further encourage research in this area of the world towards further focus and success in organizational development and business excellence arena.

Eligibility of Submission

The Award is limited to the following types of submissions:

  1. Proposal for research that was not carried out
  2. Topics have to be within the people and organizational culture and behavior area in form of:
    1. Qualitative/Quantitative research
  3. Best Practice Case Study
  4. The research should be conducted within the Middle East settings

Submission and Selection Process

The candidate has to submit the following documents in pursue of the award:

  1. A Proposal of intended research not to exceed 4 pages.
  2. Full paper/study in pdf file and word document (Guidelines are made available on University website)
  3. Updated curriculum vitae of all involved researchers of the study
The process goes through the following steps:
  1. The research proposals arrive to the Internal Committee at the Hamdan Bin Mohammad e-University for initial review and screening
  2. The selected proposals will be carried out, and respective researchers will be asked to submit the full paper/study by end of December.
  3. When the full papers/studies arrive by end of December, they will be forwarded to an International Jury of peer reviewers who are experts in the topics of the applications for double-blind peer assessment. The peers will be given an evaluation form of two parts: quantitative that arrives at a score, and qualitative which identifies main strengths and shortcomings, and recommendation for rejection or acceptance.
  4. The scores, from peers on the various applications, will be fed-back to the Internal Committee for its final decision and selection of one candidate as a winner of the award.
  5. The committee will first rank the accepted submission based on the provided quantitative and qualitative of the jury (The committee may decide to hold an interview with the candidate if necessary).
  6. The Internal Committee will vote on the first three applications for a single winner.
